Catching Some Rays

A new experiment uses New York City’s rooftop water tanks as cosmic ray detectors.

If a New York University physics professor has her way, rooftops in New York City will soon be the site of cutting-edge astrophysics research. With the help of the large wooden water tanks already atop many of the city’s buildings, Glennys Farrar hopes to detect and ultimately unravel the mysteries behind cosmic rays — the universe’s most energetic particles.
